Italy summer creative writing program

For students at CSB/SJU, this program is listed as ENGL 280: Cultural and Ethical Aspects of Creative Writing (GL) 4 credits.

The Italy Summer Program is offered through a collaboration between the College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University, the Borromeo College, and the University of Pavia in Northern Italy. Students in the program travel to Pavia to stay in a residential college with Italian and other international students for a four-week writing intensive course that fosters skills in creative writing, reading, and intercultural competency. The course itself is a creative writing workshop, which CSB+SJU students take together with Italian and international students from the University of Pavia. In our daily classes, we work together to read, translate, and discuss poems in both English and Italian; we practice writing our own poems through many writing exercises; and we workshop and revise our poems together as a writing workshop. Sponsored by the CSB Literary Arts Institute program, Writers-at-Home, Italian poets and writers are regularly invited to share their writing and discuss their creative work with students in the workshop.

Each year, the program includes excursions to cities and sites outside of Pavia: past excursions have included trips to Milan, Santa Margherita/Portofino, Le Cinque Terre, Lake Como, Florence, Rome, and Venice. Read more
